Known as “The City of Tomorrow…Today,” Troy is a forward-looking community that still celebrates its past. Sometime around 1819, Johnson Niles—a nineteenth-century politician who served in both the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate—founded “Troy Corners” by purchasing 160 acres of land that now sits in north-central Troy.
Troy Township was formally established in 1827. Town founder Johnson Niles opened a store around 1830. The Troy Hotel, another one of Niles’ properties, debuted on July 4, 1837. A tavern where locals could wet their whistles rounded out the fledgling town.
The city was incorporated in 1955 and celebrated its official fiftieth anniversary in 2005. To experience what the town was like back in Johnson Niles’ day, visit the Troy Historic Village. At the corner of Livernois Road and Wattles Road, the Village re-creates the history of the city from its founding through modern times. The Village includes a blacksmith’s shop, a general store, an 18th-century schoolhouse, and a church. Local schoolchildren enjoy field trips to the Village as part of their education.
Education is a cornerstone of Troy, thanks to institutions such as Spring Arbor University, Central Michigan University, and the International Academy of Design and Technology. Walsh College, with its acclaimed business program, is also an incubator for start-ups.
Troy is a destination for both young entrepreneurs and established companies. Behr America, Bank of America, Anchor Bay Entertainment, and Kelly Services all have a corporate presence in Troy. With Troy’s proximity to Detroit, it’s only natural that major manufacturers like DuPont Automotive and ThyssenKrupp USA conduct business here. Automotive accessory and rustproofing giant Ziebart International is headquartered in Troy.
